MUSIC
THE STORY
1985 THE RECORD BEGINS
Ken began recording on his state-of-the-art Tascam 244 four track cassette recorder in the mid 1980's. His Roland JX-8P synthesizer and Roland 707 drum machine would be the back drop for records to come. His close college friend and "musical partner in crime" Neal, would prove to be his go to bass player until eventually being replaced by a Yamaha synthesizer may years later. Flashback to 1983, the story of another Tascam multi track recorder begins. Ken purchases his first Tascam in 1983 while Neal moved out of state for graduate school. Once Neal arrived at the university he hocked is car for his own Tascam 244 so he could send cassette recordings to Ken in the mail. The two continued to make music via the postal service for years, Neal on bass and guitar and Ken on keys and drums. Ken, a schooled drummer, had played piano since 8 years old and eventually left drumming behind for his Roland 707 drum machine. Unfortunately, life got in the way and all his tapes would end up under his bed until 2019. A break from his hectic work schedule would bring him back to music. Enter Darren, a fellow band mate from Ken's band "Fun Club" in the early 90's, who would come to his rescue. Darren, who had built his small studio around 2015, took the cassettes into the digital world of Apple's Logic. Armed with UAD gear and plugins, the mixing would begin. Their love of synthesizers would prove that even old friends can reunite decades later through the power of music.
2019 THE JOURNEY CONTINUES DETROIT/NYC
Darren gets a phone call from Ken in November of 2019. Ken proceeds to say, "I need you drive to New York (from Detroit keep in mind) and pick up a mint Roland JX8P I found on eBay". Darren laughs. Road trip begins and sure enough a young girl's mom had one in a closet that was barely ever used and was handed down to her. Darren brings home a perfectly mint 1985 Roland JX8P for Ken to continue his songwriting on, his signature sound of the JX8P's unmistakable pads. Ken still has his original JX, but she is getting a little bit of a temper. Ken also has managed to acquire an arsenal of keyboards during the last year, diving head first into music once again. Darren's Studio has been upgraded thanks to Vintage King with Barefoot Monitors and plugins worth more his first car cost him. We are ready to start mixing Kens next record. There are enough Tascam 4 track cassette tapes to make numerous albums, so get ready for more Product of the 80s records to come your way!
2020 THE RECORD IS FINISHED
Almost 35 years later, "Product of the 80s-Volume One" was released on Cinco de Mayo, MMXX. After 6 months of transferring the Tascam 244 tapes into the computer, the mixing is finished. 2020 gave both Ken and Darren some downtime to finish the project and get the tunes out to adoring fans of the sounds of the 80's. You will hear influences from Tears for Fears, Sade, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, Thompson Twins and many other artists Ken was inspired by when he wrote these songs almost 3 decades ago. The album has a feel and vibe that could only be possible by its vintage roots, synths and the sound of analog tape. We were authentic in the use of effects processing as well on the record and used time period effects. Get ready for several more albums in the future as well.
